MLA Salary to be doubled.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Justice R Rajendra Babu Commission appointed by the state government to study the revision of salary and allowances of MLAs and ex-MLAs has recommended doubling of salary for members.

The commission was appointed to revise or enhance the salaries and allowances of Ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, leader of opposition, Government Chief Whip and members of Kerala Legislative Assembly.

As per the recommendations of the commission the total salary of an MLA would go up to Rs 40,250. Memmbers currently enjoy a salary of Rs 20,300.

Other recommendations include an information allowance of Rs 1000, driver allowance of Rs 6500 and hiking of constituency allowance from Rs 5000 to Rs 6500.

The Commission was also required to make suggestions to amend the Payments of Salaries and Allowances Act 1951 and Payment of Pension to members of Kerala Legislature Act, 1976.
