Kochi Metro: Ministry approves revised plan

Kochi: The Ministry of Urban Development has approved the revised project proposal for the Kochi Metro Rail project.

Kochi Metro Rail Corporation M.D. Tom Jose told Manorama News that final approval for the project would be accorded soon.

The revised proposal states that the Kkochi Metro will follow the Chennai Metro model which has sourced funds from the centre and the JBIC. Kerala convinced the centre that private participation was not a viable model for the project.

The ministry has asked the state to study the possibility of constructing commercial buildings in the land acquired for the project.

The Kochi Metro Rail Corporation envisages completion of the project in 2016 at a cost of Rs 5146 crores. A total of 22 trains with three coaches will ply between 23 metro stations.
