Kochi has become unbearably hot and mercury levels are shooting skywards. There is also another kind of slow heat that is making heartbeats race registering a high on the ‘oomph’ meter.
The State’s commercial capital is currently playing host to a variety of fashion events that are seeing nights come alive and party animals dancingaway their woes. Keeping the partying denizens of Kochi company are international models and supermodels who are arriving here by the droves.
When fashion is taking on a global perspective, with lots of Indian designers attracting international eyeballs, it is only fitting that fashion goes global in every sense of the word.
Rewind to the high priestesses of fashion who have graced Kochi recently in connection with various events — Miss Mauritius, Miss Finland, Miss India-Canada, the Ford supermodel and many more! The reasons accorded for flying down international models are many.
Kewin Shekar, Managing Director of King’s Events who conducts regular fashion shows at Emmanuval Silks, elaborates on his reasons for getting Miss Finland, Elizabeth to walk the ramp, “International models who are fair and blonde look sensational when they dress in traditional Indian attire. We are used to seeing Indian models wearing saris and Western wear, so where is the novelty factor?
There is also the curiosity factor that these videshi models evoke and there is a definite surge in the crowds when they are on stage! Another important factor is that they have no inhibitions vis-a-vis donning revealing clothes.
Indian models have a certain limit beyond which they are not comfortable with skin show.’’ Kewin adds that it is not only Kochi but also film industries that are partial to foreigners citing the example of Amy Jackson, Nargis Fakhri and Katrina Kaif. Aren’t the fees international models charge prohibitive?
Kewin affirms, “Yes, they are expensive and charge three or four times more than the Indian models but are worth every cent for the hype and publicity they generate!’’ The current fever taking Kochi by storm — Cochin Fashion Fever Nights choreographed by the internationally acclaimed Manish Dev had Miss Mauritius, Anais Veerapattran on the catwalk. Manish says, “International models get more attention on the ramp.”
Manish adds, “In addition to that, their professionalism on the ramp is a plus point. Striking poses and displaying trendy designs come naturally to them!
Their down-to-earth attitude makes them easier to work with. Some Indian models have big attitude problems and consider themselves on par with Ash after one show when the sad reality is that they do not have the quality or the stuff to carry them through.’’
Kochi is still basking in the glow of the last season of Kochi International Fashion Week and the second season has unfolded suddenly. A promotional event had Tania Singh — Miss India- Canada and Anjum Fakhi, the Ford supermodel fly down.
Gaurav Sharma who is bringing in the models says, “International models are better exposed, well groomed and ready to handle any kind of wear. Their confidence levels are good and they are aware about body language.
’’ Nevertheless Gaurav affirms that the Indian models are also good and the Kingfisher Ultra Kochi International Fashion Week will see a mix of desi and videshi.
Meanwhile Kochi — the queen of good times, gears up to shine on!
