Attukal Pongala  is a famous ritual held at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple inTrivandrum, Kerala,   It us considered as  the largest gathering of women  dovotees in a single place on a single day  for a pariculara ceremony in the world.  The Attukal Pongala 2012  will be celebrated in  March 7. Attukal temple is   known as the Sabarimala of women. 

The Pongala festival will commence when the idol of the Devi will be embellished with ‘kappu.’

History of Attukal Pongala  and the Festival details.

Attukal Pongala is a famous Hindu festival celebrated annually at the renowned Attukal Devi Templein Trivandrum, Kerala. Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Trivandrum,  in Kerala.   Pongala  is a special temple practice of offering boiled rice in earthern pot to the goddess. The significance of Attukal Devi Temple Pongala is the largest throng  of women devotees  in the world irrespective of caste, creed or religion. 

The  Pongala is a 10 days festival program which usually comes  on the month of  February – March every year ( Makaram – Kumbham in the Malayalam calendar). The festival begins on the Malayalam  Karthika star with the traditional Kappukettu and Kudiyiruthu ceremony. The ninth day of the festival is the  famous ritual- attraction – the Pongala Mahotsavam day. And the festival will conclude with the Kuruthitharpanam at night.
